Create Time:2023-05-10

On April 24, QBPC joined NBCUniversal and Beijing Universal Resort to hold an open day for members and a seminar on typical cases of intellectual property protection in NBCUniversal and Beijing Universal Resort, as a warm-up event for the forthcoming 23rd World Intellectual Property Day. Representatives from the judiciary, law enforcement, right holders, academia, and platforms related to IPR protection discussed the development of IPR protection in Beijing, typical IPR protection issues and other topics of common concern.

The law enforcement and judicial representatives were from Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office, the General Brigade of Cultural Market Law Enforcement of Beijing Municipality, the General Enforcement Corps of Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation, the Environment, Food and Drug Protection Department of Tongzhou Public Security Sub-bureau, the People's Procuratorate of Tongzhou District, and the Market Supervision and Administration Bureau of Tongzhou District. Representatives from 26 QBPC member companies participated in the seminar as brand owners.

Michael Ding, Chair of QBPC, and Shawn Yun, SVP of Beijing Universal Resort, gave opening speeches as the event organizers. Michael hoped that the event could help members better understand the importance and explore the value of IP rights to business, promote the communication among members and enable them to learn from each other. He also expressed gratitude to NBC Universal and Beijing Universal Resort for their strong support as well as the guests and members for their participation. He expected to see more diverse and in-depth discussion at member open day events which could provide more opportunities for exchanging and sharing.

In his speech, Shawn Yun emphasized the importance of IPR protection to Beijing Universal Resort. As a movie-based theme park, every aspect of Beijing Universal Resort, from design to construction, preparation, opening, and operations, was closely related to intellectual property rights. It could not have run smoothly without a strong protection system. Shawn appreciated the strong support given by authorities of all levels in Beijing, including Tongzhou District, and looked forward to sharing the phased achievements gained so far through the event.

Pan Wei, Director of the Intellectual Property Protection Division of the Beijing Intellectual Property Office, delivered a keynote speech on the development of IPR protection in Beijing. She introduced the work of Beijing Intellectual Property Office, as well as the major tasks completed in close cooperation with various administrative and judicial departments at the municipal level. She also expressed the hope that from this year immediately after the 20th CPC National Congress, all walks of life, including administrative and judicial departments, industry associations, and enterprises, should work together towards a brighter future for IPR protection.

The first section of the seminar focused on typical issues in criminal protection of intellectual property rights. Speakers introduced the challenges encountered by the police at each stage of enforcement and their solutions, the confirmation of facts and charges by prosecutors in the process of reviewing and prosecuting, and the cooperation and assistance mechanisms provided by platforms for law enforcement action. In addition, they gave suggestions to right holders from their different perspectives. The second section of the seminar delved into typical issues in administrative protection of intellectual property rights. Three guest speakers from administrative enforcement agencies shared their experience and problems during the case-handling process. Professor Zheng Ning from the Communication University of China moderated the second section, summarized and gave comments on the session.

In addition to the seminar, the Open Day event also included a session in which NBCUniversal and Beijing Universal Resort presented Appreciation Plaques to the law enforcement agencies, demonstrating the confidence and determination of all parties to jointly promote a favorable environment for protecting the IPR. The event was concluded by a tour in the theme park.
